This is a subtitle for your new post

Have you ever found yourself feeling overwhelmed, anxious, angry, or emotionally shut down without fully understanding why? You may tell yourself,

          “I’m overreacting,”

           or

          “This shouldn’t bother me.”

But if you’ve experienced trauma, your brain and body may simply be doing what they were designed to do—protect you.

can help reduce self-blame and increase self-compassion.

          What Is a Trauma Trigger?

A trauma trigger is anything that reminds your nervous system of a past traumatic experience. Triggers can be obvious or subtle, and they are often unique to each individual.

          Examples include:

          ● A particular smell, sound, or song

          ● Certain dates or seasons

          ● Raised voices or conflict

          ● Feeling ignored or criticized

          ● Physical touch

          ● A specific place or environment

          ● Feeling trapped, powerless, or out of control

Your brain doesn’t always distinguish between

          past danger

           and

          present safety.

When it recognizes something that resembles a previous threat, it can activate your body’s survival response before you’re even consciously aware of it.

          What Are Trauma Reactions?

Trauma reactions are the emotional, physical, cognitive, and behavioural responses that occur after a trigger activates your nervous system.

These reactions are not signs of weakness—they are protective responses that developed to help you survive.

          Common trauma reactions include:

          Emotional

          ● Anxiety or panic

          ● Irritability or anger

          ● Shame or guilt

          ● Sadness

          ● Racing heart

          ● Muscle tension

          ● Sweating

          ● Fatigue

          ● Headaches or stomach upset

          Cognitive

          ● Memory problems

          ● Feeling disconnected from reality

          ● Negative beliefs about yourself or others

          Behavioural

          ● Avoiding people or places

          ● Withdrawing from loved ones

          ● Becoming overly controlling

          ● People-pleasing

          ● Using substances or other coping behaviours to numb difficult emotions

Why Do Trauma Reactions Feel So Intense?

Trauma changes how the nervous system responds to perceived danger. Rather than asking,

          “Am I actually safe?”

           the brain often asks,

“Does this remind me of when I wasn’t safe?”

This happens because the survival parts of the brain react much faster than the thinking parts. By the time your logical brain catches up, your body may already be in fight, flight, freeze, or fawn mode.

Your nervous system is trying to protect you—not punish you.

          Learning to Recognize Your Triggers

Healing doesn’t mean you’ll never be triggered again. It means becoming more aware of what activates your nervous system and learning how to respond differently.

Some helpful questions to ask yourself include:

          ● What happened just before I felt overwhelmed?

          ● What emotion am I experiencing?

          ● Does this feeling remind me of another time in my life?

          ● What does my body need right now to feel safe?

Over time, recognizing patterns can reduce the intensity of trauma reactions and increase your sense of control.

          Healing Is Possible

Trauma recovery isn’t about forgetting what happened. It’s about helping your nervous system learn that the danger has passed.

Through trauma-responsive therapy such as the ITATM, people can learn to:

          ● Understand their nervous system

          ● Identify triggers before they escalate

          ● Develop healthier coping strategies

          ● Process unresolved traumatic experiences

          ● Build greater emotional regulation and resilience

Healing is not about becoming a different person. It’s about reconnecting with the version of yourself that no longer has to live in survival mode.

If you find that trauma reactions are affecting your relationships, work, parenting, or daily life, reaching out for support can be an important step. With the right therapeutic approach, it is possible to feel safer in your body, more connected in your relationships, and more confident navigating life’s challenges.
